Train Sim World 2020 is on sale for less than $9. It’s a pretty decent sim if your system is reasonably powerful. It ran fine on my i7-3770/GTX 1080 system, and worked even better when I upgraded RAM and CPU.

For some reason I read the thread title and this what I thought

I used to play them a lot. But their business model relies on you buying the overpriced DLC.

What's a train?

I do like trains, but I didn’t find Train Simulator very interesting. Any reason to believe I’d like TSW more?
And actually are they the same? They are both Dovetail?

It’s worth it, but keep in mind that, like all Dovetail products, the purchase of the base program is just the beginning. Always remember to be patient and wait for the DLC to go on sale.

How does a 72-month payment plan sound

I don’t mind that model when it’s done the way Paradox does it, offering only slightly overpriced DLC, with some free updates, and putting things on sale at a good discount a few times a year. The sim community’s “ensure we stay niche by pricing out everyone but the most hardcore geeks” approach doesn’t work as nicely.

There’s a bit more realism to it, with some scenarios making you get out of the cab to perform various tasks (starting the engine, repositioning on a turntable, uncoupling, etc.) The systems are more accurately modeled, especially the brakes, so it’s not just a simple matter of pushing buttons and having things happen instantaneously. You have to know how these systems work, and thus it’s more of a challenge to operate as compared to previous railroad simulations. If you like that complexity and accuracy it can be entertaining, but if you don’t I could see that level of detail to be annoying.

Used to play MSTS (Microsoft Train Simulator) a lot, but it’s not nearly as good as it used to be now that there are sims with vastly better physics/graphics/everything.
Unfortunately, most train sims nowadays either have absolutely nothing in terms of modding communities or everything is locked behind ridiculous DLC. I mean, train sims are the most expensive games on Steam if you were to buy all the DLC they come with.
It’s also why I still have FSX installed to my PC. X-Plane 11 may be vastly superior, but FSX mod support and modding communities are absolutely unmatched.

True, but if you’re patient and shop around you can get some good deals on the DLC. In a way I like that the add-ons exist; if I don’t enjoy the program my investment is minimal, but if you do like it it extends the useful life of the program.

Only if they are made in BeamNG Drive.

I prefer the Trainz series, but that is mostly because I enjoy creating routes, even though I never finish any. However, I probably buy every 4th or 5th version because the updates between games are minimal. Train Sim 2020 is not bad if I just feel like driving, but I don’t play enough to warrant any DLC.
TSW will only appeal to me once they have a multiplayer aspect like Run8 does . Run8 is super hardcore and also runs on a stupid overpriced DLC model. Between their pricing , finding time, and some criticism of/by the devs have kept me from purchasing it. It does look neat though.

I have unresolved feelings towards whoever posted a video of train stunts using that program. At the end it felt too much like watching NASCAR, already horribly sickening, for the crashes.

How about multi-track drifting

No, no, A-Train is a totally different game:

A retired buddy of mine and I were talking about those just this week. He’s a been model train guy and was lamenting that the shows and clubs really have shrunk over the last decade. I though maybe it was because more folks were playing these virtual sims. Lots of fun for the price of the game, rather than potentially tens of thousands of dollars in scale models.

They are both Dovetail, but TSW is much newer and more technical.

Hmm, I have never heard of that program. Thanks for the link. It does look interesting, but I think the DLC model makes Dovetail’s look reasonable. I doubt that you’ll be able to find any of their stuff on sale at any time. And the whole warning about not being able to re-download? That seems like deflection; if they know that you purchased the software you should be able to download again later.

Y eah, I have never seen it go on sale and I doubt it will. There have been some complaints about the devs and their tight grip on the program. I think if they opened up a little bit and brought some more talent, they could easily blow TSW out of the water (at least for the US market).
